220 Kilometers of Ocean Roar
Starting from São Torpes south of Sines down to Cabo de São Vicente at the edge of the European continent, the Fishermen’s Trail follows the cliff paths forged by local anglers descending sheer 70-meter sea stacks with bamboo cane rods.
I embarked on this trail with a 6.8-kilogram pack base weight, zero headphones, and a commitment to walk no more than 14 kilometers on any given day.
"When you walk on loose dune sand for four weeks, your stride changes from a forward rush into a rhythmic grounding."
The Ocean Storks of Cabo Sardão
Southwest Portugal is the only location on earth where white storks build their nests directly on precarious, salt-sprayed sea cliffs rather than high trees or church bell towers. Near Cabo Sardão lighthouse, you can stand on the cliff edge and watch parent storks ride the Atlantic updrafts below you.
Resting in Zambujeira do Mar
In the whitewashed village of Zambujeira, winter evenings mean grilled sea bass caught by line that afternoon, boiled local sweet potatoes from Aljezur, and cold Vinho Verde served in ceramic pitchers. The Atlantic swells provide a steady acoustic rhythm that lulls you to sleep within minutes.
